Just wanted to let my readers know that as of sometime in January of 2011, I will be yet another Yankee who has fled to Texas. My wife has just accepted a job at a company based in Houston, and since I can do what I do from just about anywhere, we said… what the hell. Everyone else seems to be going to Texas, why not us?
Of course, they want her at her desk early in January. It’s now middle of December. Not a whole lot of time. So I’ll be a bit busy and preoccupied with the move. Blogging might take a hit, and I may be even more difficult to pin down, but it should all be over and done with by the end of December.
Houston, you’ve been warned.

Good place to be if you’re in real estate, Rob. That said, I can’t imagine the massive culture shock you’re about to be faced with, coming from NY! Good luck with the move.

Oh boy, you’d better strap in for the ride. TX in general is a very conservative area, which of course fits you just fine. Houston isn’t Austin, if that rowdy time a while back still conjures memories of smart people, great food and good times…Houston is a great big ole steaming mess of sprawl, which should be reminensct of the Jersery Turpike/the Garden State/and the Long Island freeway combined; plus, on a clear day (which does happen on occassion) you can see the oil refineries in the distance…Good luck to you and your family, and at least you can enjoy the brisket barbecue as I have noticed that you do like to cook on the grill. Those ole boys can show you how…

I made the same move in the 90s. Houston is a great city. I wasn’t born in Texas, but got here as fast as I could.
